Artist Statement

I paint the things which visually excite me and stir my emotions. Landscapes, nature in the city, especially the birds and trees, the season and its colours, my journey into the studio every morning, and the studio itself, all these things inspire me and my paintings.

In my paintings I am simply a person seeing, experiencing things in the world, then translating and recollecting these experiences back inside in the studio, feeling something new and different with each brushstroke.

Although beginning with an idea of an image, my paintings are process driven and I seek out the unexpected and encourage the spontaneous through snap decisions with the paintbrush and playful arrangements of canvas collage. Painting for me, as with walking, is an act of discovery and full of surprises. I can never quite predict what a painting is going to look like before I do it, or envision what will be at the end of a path, before I’ve reached it.
